Who Teaches the Teacher in an Algorithmic Echo Chamber?
And in software development?
Exactly the same is happening. AI is using code generated by AI to developer software. With time, it will be so optimized that humans won’t be able to read it and will become completely dependent on machines.
Low-code was the first time since functional programming that I liked what I was seeing. We could instruct the machine by listing steps. Sure, many languages have it as the recommended usage, but here you don’t get an option. It is human readable no matter what you do (although I can give the name of some people who are the exception to the rule).
The difference to conventional programming, is that most of the instruction interpretation is decided by the server, choosing the best practices on your behalf, and always updated in case things change.
That’s why I say low-code is a career for reskilling into IT. You need to talk mostly business language, not computer language. The thing is, you still need a “programming expert”, aka Tech Lead, to validate everyone’s work. There is no replacement.
And while some companies are diving directly into the “citizen developer” thinking it is a cheaper solution for the lack of people, not considering the final product, others are going the opposite way, focusing on getting only seasoned developers, even if a major part of the tasks are incredibly boring for them. If they already fail to balance human resources, imagine how it will go with AI when they all assume no more people are needed.
The same way the press, the typing machine, the calculator and the computers were only accelerators for the human creation, leaving room for human ingenuity, AI can also be a powerful tool in such area. The thinkers get a fast way to showcase what they need and the real artists will do something with it. It may seem a threat for creators, but it is a facilitator in communication, allowing to create faster (less iterations) and to have happier clients. Unless companies start replacing humans with machines, which we are starting to see. And the human consumers are being dehumanized to appreciate the AI creations.
Just don’t forget to follow the rules.
